The Loeries Brand South Africa Young Creatives Award honours the two young creatives who told the best stories in 2019

Simphiwe Mnguni, Graphic Designer at Sunshinegun, and Gregory Leigh Booysen, Art Director at King James, were awarded the Brand South Africa Young Creatives Award during the first night of the 41st Loerie Awards, held at the Durban ICC on Friday 23 August. The award recognises the top young creatives in the industry, aged 27 or younger. Each winner receives a Gold Loerie and a prize of US$5,000.

“Recognising the young creatives of our industry is one of the most important roles of the Loeries,” says Loeries CEO, Andrew Human. All innovation starts with ideas, and the talented minds that we nurture today will be tomorrow’s creative leaders.”

Bronwen Rautenbach, Co-founder & Creative Partner at Sunshinegun sees Simphiwe’s growth within their agency as inspiring. “We’ve created a space where young people can grow into their best creative selves and Simps has done precisely that. From the start her eye for colour and pattern has been remarkable, the sensitive and modern interpretation of her Ndebele culture just completely sets her apart.”

Simps is a passionate designer and deeply grateful to have enjoyed the mentorship of George and Bronwen Rautenbach, the creative partners at Sunshinegun. “They have allowed me to flex my creativity in conceptualising and developing local and international design.”

“The value Gregory has added to each piece of work he does and to the agency as a whole is immeasurable,” says Nkanyezi Masango, Creative Director at King James. “He has the natural ability to think strategically and laterally at the same time, and when it comes to craftsmanship, Gregory takes an idea to a level that no-one can imagine.”

In 2015 Gregory was awarded two Golds and a Bronze Loerie for his student work at the AAA School of Advertising in Cape Town. “I always punch above my weight, even though I am young. I love the challenges that come with working with iconic brands and big campaigns.”

“It has been a 3-year partnership and each year we are inspired by the extent of young talent in the region,” says Sithembile Ntombela, General Manager of marketing at Brand South Africa. “Their energy, attitude and passion for the industry again reached new heights and we salute Simphiwe and Gregory who, against tough competition, told the best stories this year.”
