London-based Katja Thielen is the Design Jury President for the Loeries 2019. Katja co-founded Together Design in 2003 and she brings an impeccable eye and over 20 years of design experience to the judging team.

Katja’s collaboration-driven agency has produced engaging and beautiful work for diverse and interesting clients, including designing for some of the world’s best loved British brands: Fortnum & Mason, Caffè Nero, Roald Dahl, Gordon’s Gin, Peter Rabbit, the Museum of London and five stamp collections for the Royal Mail. She has vast experience across both B2B and B2C markets.

Katja’s skills don’t end with traditional advertising. In 2013, Together Design launched Perfectly Put Together, an online store selling beautiful oddities, each unique and wonderful. This retail adventure has helped Katja to further understand the market and her clients. She loves the challenge of developing emotional connections, crafting personality and creating new brands – making her even more passionate about consumer brands and the industry as a whole.

Brian Mtongana

Brian Mtongana is currently Design Director at Woolworths South Africas marketing departmentIts a crucial portfolio that includes Branding, Communication Design; Packaging Design for the WHL group for South Africa and Australia at David Joneswhich includes, Food, Clothing, Beauty and HomewareHe also is a creative custodian of the Woolworths Brand as he has the task of maintaining and upholding the Woolworths brand personality through design and consistent application of the Woolworths Corporate Identity across different marketing platforms externally and internallyAs a Senior Manager in the business, he also lends his creative expertise across the whole business, and collaborating with colleagues in the Advertising, Digital, VM and Store Design teams as well as creative strategic input in the different areas of the business. The creative decisions he makes are crucial and have a huge impact in the commercial performance of the business as he and the team hes leading have to constantly be innovative, help the business units communicate, engage and entice customers to buy Woolworths products through innovative design. Woolworths is a very aspirational and loved brand in South Africa. Under his leadership Woolworths has won a few design awards for packaging design and other design related competitions. 

Brian graduated from Durban University of Technology in 2002 with three distinctions for design and was awarded Designer of the Year. Ithe same year won a design competition run by Design Indaba and facilitated and judged by internationally well-known Creative DirectoVince Frost from Frost Design in AustraliaThats where he was spotted by Ravi Naidoo founder of Design Indaba. In 2002 Brian joined Ravi at Interactive Africa, which produces the world-renowned Design Indaba conference which he worked on for eight years.  

Brians career literally took off straight from university, as he worked on Mark Shuttleworths First African In Space project and designed the patch for Marks spacesuit and was involved in the Hip2b2 campaign to promote maths and science in schools which followed after his return from spaceHe also designed the official invitation for the 2010 FIFA Confederations Cup, which was sent around the world to various football federations and personalities including the likes of FIFA former president Sepp Blatter and worked on a lot of world cup related projects leading up to 2010. Brian is also known for his Cape flavoured Googlethu t-shirt, produced by Laugh It Off. 

In 2008 Brian worked in Sydney, Australia, at Frost Design with world renowned Vince Frost and in 2009 he was headhunted by Woolworths to head up design for the brand in their in-house design agency. 

Brian is very well travelled and is always in search of the latest design trends throughout the world through his work. He has been numerous times in London, Paris, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Amsterdam, Zurich, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Sydney to mention a fewHes also public speaker having spoken across the country in a few design conferences including the WGSN Conference, Business of Design to name a few. Hes passionate about grooming and developing young talent especially straight from design schools for them to be ready for industry and has spoken in numerous design educators conferences to equip and inspire teachers on how creative ways to teach design. 

One of his exciting projects is the Pharrell and Woolworths Collaboration where he played a key creative lead role in collaboration with other creatives in the business in developing and creating the look and feel for the campaign ARE YOU WITH US? He also used this very project to groom young up and coming designers from high schools and design colleges through the T-shirt competition for the Pharrell and Woolworths campaign. Through the project he spotted talent that hes been using for a lot illustrations that you have been seeing in some of the food packaging at Woolworths. His most recent big project was being Creative Director on launching branding and packaging design for Australian retail giant David Jones which recently launched a high end food retail concept in their stores with Bondi Junction being their first roll out. This project bagged a Silver bird at the Loeries in 2018. He was featured on Destiny Man MagazinePower of 40, which celebrates 40 men under 40 who are trailblazers in their respective fields and Equinox magazine. 

Hes a family man married to the celebrated international South African Celebrity CheSiba Mtongana and they have 3 children, LonwaboLinamandla and BuhlebeNkosi and another little princess on the way. They are based in the creative and culinary hub of SA, Cape Town.

Dante Lupini

I, Dante Lupini graduated from the University of Johannesburg with a degree in Industrial design and thereafter with a Master of Design degree
in Vehicle Design from the Royal College of Art in London.


In my 20 years+ of market experience I have worked extensively in the
fields of Industrial and Product design, Experiential and Brand design,
Point of sale and Packaging design.

Jan-Hendrik Labuschagne

Jan-Hendrik’s creative credits during his time at Grid include work on two Loeries Grand Prix winners – Anti Est (2014) and Marble (2017). His work has also been recognised internationally at D&AD and OneShow.

He has also been involved in some of the largest brand redesigns in recent memory.
This includes work done for the Telkom Group and FNB.

He believes in ideas. Particularly ideas that refuse to be put into neat little boxes, even though he feels that there isn’t anything wrong with beautiful boxes.

His goal in work and life is to remain brave enough to embrace mistakes and remain delightfully uncomfortable.

Kassie Naidoo

Kassie Naidoo has built her career as a creative director over the past 3 decades, expressing herself in design, art direction and finding ways to solve problems through creative thought and action. Beginning her career in magazine design, she has gone on to work with leading advertising and design agencies. Kassie brings passion, energy, experience, a collaborative approach and a sense of play to each project she works on. With an eye for detail and strategic creative mind, Kassie’s work combines intuition with insight and experience. Her 11 years in magazine design and art direction included titles such as Elle, Elle Decoration, De Kat, YMag, and the Financial Mail. During her 15 years in advertising, Kassie worked with some of South Africa’s best agencies like Draft FCB, TBWA/Gavin/Reddy, King James Group, and Young & Rubicam. Since 2015 Kassie has collaborated with brands and agencies to create engaging, relevant campaigns as well as give her time and passion to NPOs wanting to bring about transformation for a better future. Thus her recent creative start-up The Imaginariansa company she founded in May. “The power of creativity is immense, at The Imaginarians, I want to imagine better future worlds are possible through empathy, collaboration and conscious creativity.”  

Kassie recently joined Lampost Productions as partner and creative director, wanting to play her role in Africa’s visual storytelling culture.  

 

Liana Liebenberg

Liana Liebenberg is currently the Head of Design at FCB Joburg. She started her career at The Jupiter Drawing Room doing interdisciplinary design for clients such as ABSA, MTN, SAA  
and Sasol.  
 
Working at several large agencies over the next 10 years she worked on brands ranging from Plascon to Converse and Wrigleys. In 2013 she joined the FCB team. Working with this phenomenal team she has been recognized at Cannes, D&AD, LoeriesClios, New York Festivals and OneShow 
 
Her passion for conceptual African design led to her taking on the role of Head of Design at FCB Joburg in 2017, where she now works with her team to design and create everything from truly African corporate identities to product design and activations.

Nisha van der Hoven
Curator, FuturePart

Nisha van der Hoven is a Johannesburg based architect with a multi-disciplinary approach to design.  Her interests in architecture, interiors, workspace strategy, furniture, film, research and exhibitions culminate in collaborative and meaningful projects.  Drawing inspiration from art, fashion and travel allows her work to oscillate between disciplines.

She has a strong belief in learning by experimenting and finding inspiration through the process of making.  This approach has manifested itself in her role as curator for FuturePart.

FuturePart, an initiative of Boogertman + Partners Architects, is an agency for rigorous research and experimental trans-disciplinary design thinking within practice.  It is a place for new ideas, youthful input and innovation beyond the realm of architecture.

Her passion for workplace design has fostered a relationship with Workshop17, a co-working brand focused on people, innovation and collaboration.  As their lead architect, Nisha is responsible for the design of their new locations along with their in-house design team.  Some of Workshop17’s recent projects include Firestation, Rosebank and Tabakhuis, Paarl.
