Hall of Fame - Greg Gray
Greg Gray, renowned film director at Cape Town production company Romance Films was inducted into the Loeries Hall of Fame during the final night of the 40th Loerie Awards, held at the Durban ICC on Saturday 18 August. He is the second film director to receive this honour after Keith Rose was inducted in 2014. “Everyone in the commercials industry knows Greg Gray,” said Loeries CEO Andrew Human. “He has been responsible for an amazing body of beautiful, memorable and award-wining work over many years – a true legend in the industry.” 

Marketing Leadership & Innovation - Doug Place
Doug Place, Chief Marketing Officer of Nando’s IMEA, has been awarded the Marketing Leadership and Innovation Award at the first night of the 40th Loerie Awards, held at the Durban ICC on Friday night. Loeries CEO, Andrew Human said that companies like Nando’s set a high bar in brand leadership and it takes great skill from individuals of Doug’s professional calibre to maintain this kind of lead. “This award is designed to honour an achiever like Doug who brings sustained dedication and performance as a marketing professional. We make this award based on his commitment and innovative approach to building brands.”

The Loeries appoints Tseliso Rangaka as new Chair of the Loeries
Tseliso Rangaka, Executive Creative Director at Ogilvy Cape Town, has been appointed Chair of the Loeries for the next two years. He takes over from Suhana Gordhan, Creative Director at FCB Africa, who ended her term as Chairwoman. “It’s a great honour to be asked to serve the organisation that shines a light on the thing I’m most passionate about: creative excellence. I’ve been involved with the Loeries for a while and I know that this role is going to stretch my thinking and my creative process. By the same token, I expect my experience to inform the role,” said Rangaka.

Brand South Africa Young Creatives Award
Kirstin Uken, designer at Sunshinegun, and David Franciscus, founder and producer/director of Protagonist Films, were awarded the Brand South Africa Young Creatives Award during the first night of the 40th Loerie Awards, held at the Durban ICC on Friday 17 August. The award, sponsored by Brand South Africa, recognises the creative performance of individuals aged 27 or younger. Each winner receives a Gold Loerie and US$5,000. Loeries CEO, Andrew Human, who believes the future of the creative economy is inextricably linked to the young talent of today, said the high standard of creativity in their work had stood out from the other candidates. “Both Kirstin and David have wonderful talent and I hope this award encourages them to continue to do great work,” said Human.

Loeries Creative Future Scholarship
In its ongoing support of young talent development, the Loeries announced a new partnership with the AAA School of Advertising Johannesburg and TBWA Hunt Lascaris Johannesburg who, together, are contributing to the Creative Future ScholarshipThe scholarship launched in 2008 to support talented youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds. Since 2015, when the Loeries moved to Durban, it has benefited 11 local students to the value of R8 million, in partnership with Vega.

In tough economic times, the contribution to education is vital and this partnership ensures that the scholarship can continue to benefit young talent. Pete Khoury, Chief Creative Officer at TBWA Hunt Lascaris Johannesburg challenged other agencies to also sponsor the Creative Future Scholarship. "The more sponsorships the Loeries gets, the wider our talent pool becomes," he said.

Agency & Regional Agency Group of the Year
The top three Agencies of the Year are: First – Joe Public United, Second – Impact BBDO Dubai, and Third – King James Group. The top three Regional Agency Groups of the Year are: First – TBWA\, Second – Ogilvy EMEA, and Third – Joe Public United.
