Chrisna is judging the Loeries for the second consecutive year. A native Namibian, she has worked on a wide range of big and small brands for JWT in South Africa and Germany, and for King James in Cape Town. It was there that she was a key member of the team that helped create a strategy for the Johnnie Walker brand, which saw it, end a challenging period with the award-winning “Meet Your Match” and “Johnnie Walker Wager” campaigns.

A 20-year plus veteran, Mathieu started as a Strategic Planner with Y&R in Paris. He joined Ogilvy & Mather in 2000 and in 2014 Mathieu joined Ogilvy Africa as Regional Managing Director to accelerate the growth of the Group in Sub-Saharan Africa.

After a 20-year award-winning advertising career spanning 5 continents, Cal settled in South Africa in 1999 where he founded African’s first Human Centred Design Consultancy, Matchboxology. Matchboxology helps leaders lead in a world where consumers and communities are inseparably linked and where global donors, as well as companies/brands, have an undeniable development impact on societies. His expertise in HCD leads brands, NGO’s, development organisations and governments to uncover innovative opportunities for stronger, deeper relationships with individuals while stimulating positive human behaviours

Clients across 7 countries include global brands Levi’s®, Barclays, MTN, Adidas, UNICEF, The World Bank & USAID/PEPFAR assignments in public health behavior change through development giants Abt Associates, JSI, PSI, Palladium, Conrad & Johns Hopkins.

Matchboxology have won numerous local and international accolades for their work, including USAID Best Practice Certifications, A Gates Global Grand Challenge Grant, and the first advertising Loeries Gold Ubuntu award. Matchboxology’s innovative Scrutinize HIV prevention campaign is the only public health campaign to have ever won a favourite teen choice award in the Sunday Times Top Brands Awards.

Alan is elderly. You could say ancient. He goes back so far that he used to play five-a-side with Moses. Which means he’s also been in the business for a long time. Long enough to have worked everywhere from London to Jo’burg, in Kenya, the length and breadth of Africa and now down at the beach; in some of the most awarded shops like Net#work, The Jupiter Drawing Room, Ogilvy, and TBWA, racking up a heavy collection of metal for himself along the way – at Cannes, London International, New York Festival, Loeries, Vukas, Echos, and Assegais. But only 'in-book' at One Show. Bloody underachiever.

In his own words, “What catapults me out of bed in the morning? Knowing that I’m guaranteed to be inspired every day by frikken goosebump-inducing ideas and equally exciting colleagues. I’m telling you, I feel sincerely blessed to be in this game and to have worked with so many genuinely good guys: Graham Warsop, Johnny Deeb, Chris Gotz, Ahmed Tilly and Fran Luckin…. the list just goes on and on.

What I love about all of them is their ability to inspire, their infectious passion and that sense of never-ending curiosity; AND their skill in being able to see through all the ‘noise’ and recognise that kernel of a great idea, then know how to nurture it to genius.

This is what I’ll be looking for in the work I’ll be judging this year – those wonderfully simple ideas, beautifully crafted - that’ll get my heart pumping and (hopefully) reverse that aging process a bit.”

Carol Coetzee

Carol became the CEO of the KZN Film Commission in October 2013. Being the first employee she was required to set the strategic foundation and establish the new business. Prior to that Carol headed up the Accounts, Industry and Business Development Department (AIBD) as an associate director at EY in KZN. Her role included supporting companies develop their strategies into Africa through the use of the Growing Beyond Borders Tool, building the KZN business and project managing public sector assignments. Carol held the position of HOD and Accounting Officer for Department of Economic Development and Tourism in KZN for 5 years until 2011. In this executive position, she was responsible for an R1,6B budget with governance and oversight of 9 public entities including Ithala, DTP, Trade and Investment, Tourism KZN. Prior to this, she was the Accountant-General and Accounting Officer for KZN Provincial Treasury for 6 years. As the Deputy-Director-General she was involved in driving financial management reforms post-PFMA promulgation including the investment of public funds totaling R2billion on a weekly basis. The reform included CFO structures, SCM and Asset management, new accounting systems and financial statements, representing the province at the ASB – Developed SCM Policy dealing with B-BBEE.

She is a qualified chartered accountant.

Marcel Rossouw

Marcel has been active in the digital design and communication industry for over 18 years. He currently leads Accenture’s Design & Innovation capability in South Africa. His current practice and interests lie in fields of design strategy and related methodologies, and the fostering of design lead innovation and leadership within large organisations.

Passionate South African, wife, daughter, sister, mother, voracious reader, collaborator, lover of challenge & change, fiercely loyal to the notion of the power of single actions enabling quantum changes, reluctant gym-goer, erstwhile boxer, speaker of some Greek, learner, teacher, mentor, mentee and deep believer in the power of brands and humans.

Heidi was previously Executive Manager, Group Marketing, Loyalty & Strategic Partnerships at Comair taking care of kulula.com, British Airways, SLOW lounges, Daddy’s Deals, Kulula Credit Card, Jetsetters and Executive Club. Before that, she was Deputy CEO & Marketing Director at research house Ipsos Markinor, after some time in the pharmaceutical industry following a BSc degree in nursing at Wits. 

Heidi is a Member of Vega Brand School National Advisory Council. She served for 7 years as a Board member and Deputy Chairman of the Marketing Association of South Africa and as Board member of ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulations) and has judged the Association for Communication & Advertising’s APEX awards, the Prisa Prism awards, the FM AdFocus awards and the AMASA Roger Garlick Innovation in Media award. She is a partner at Halo – The Brand Led Communications Agency. 

Heidi joined Hollard in May 2013 and her role at Hollard includes all group brand activities including marketing and communications, internal comms and culture, digital marketing and e-commerce and sponsorship as well as the group’s Customer Centricity initiatives. 

She believes in sprinkles and chocolate cake, and that it takes a village to raise a brand. 

Jerry Mpufane

He is the Vice-Chairman of the Association of Communications Agencies (ACA) and a Member of the Board of the Loerie Awards. He is a Judge of the Bookmarks Awards, The Loerie Awards, and PRISM Awards.

Ivo Brodnick

Ivo has 20 years of experience in information science and software architecture as well as in marketing and communication. He worked in scientific research and supercomputing, started two digital agencies in Austria, prior to falling in love with Cape Town and making it his home. After successful years at Hellocomputer and Punk, he started QDivision in 2015 - a specialized product and service design company.

 

Tseliso Rangaka

Tseliso studied journalism at Rhodes University, hoping it would serve as a backdoor into broadcasting. As he was wrapping up his degree, he found a discarded flyer from the AAA School of Advertising, which had visited the campus a week before, and discovered a way to turn creative writing into a career.

In 1999, fresh out of AAA, Tseliso joined Lindsay Smithers FCB as a copywriter where he helped launch the “How can we help you?” campaign for FNB and worked on Vodacom, Toyota, and Adcock Ingram.

He spent two years out of agencies helping to launch his family’s wine business before joining Ogilvy & Mather Johannesburg in 2007 looking after the South African Tourism, GSK, Cadbury and Coca-Cola accounts, among others.

In 2013, he moved to Ogilvy & Mather Cape Town as Creative Director on Castle Lite, Metropolitan and Hansa Pilsner before becoming ECD in 2015. He has been the recipient of numerous international and local creative awards including Cannes Lions, D&AD and Loeries.

Tseliso is passionate about empowering young black talent and believes the industry needs to look beyond ad schools and to start exposing high-school kids to the industry as a possible future career path.

Yegs Ramiah

An experienced financial services executive with sound strategic ability, an independent mindset, strong negotiation skills and levels of accountability which results in effective decision making. Lead the rebrand of Sanlam in 2014 and the rebrand of Santam in 2011. Awarded Loeries Marketing Leadership and Innovation Award in 2016. More recently lead the transformation strategy for the Sanlam Group, positioning Sanlam as a Pan African Financial Services Company. With strong presentation skills, detailed understanding of the legal and regulatory environment and a passion for building value for organisations through value adding customer focused strategies. Drives a culture of marketing metrics and ROI. Yegs is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa with an MBA.

 

Tiekie Barnard

Tiekie calls herself an activist with a business angle and she strongly believes in the importance of profit with purpose. Tiekie is a trainer of young entrepreneurs in operational and financial capacity building, an SMME Business Consultant, a Vega Guest lecturer, a CSI Awards judge, a Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) stakeholder, a CSI, sustainability and shared value strategist; a Loeries judge and the founder and CEO of Shift Social Development. Tiekie holds an Honours degree in Brand Leadership from Vega.

She spent 22 years in the advertising industry and in that time, she held the position of Group Operating Systems Director at Net#work BBDO as well as having the role of General Manager at Proximity#ttp. In 2008, she took on the position as COO of Kagiso TV & Communications where she focused on changing behavior through social development projects in marginalised communities. She founded Tiekie Barnard Consultancy in 2012 an effort to ensure that more businesses align their strategy with the practice of doing good while doing good business.”

 Tiekie is the owner and founder of Tiekie Barnard Consultancy (TB Consult) that went through a name and shareholder change in August 2016, to become Shift Social Development, a majority black women owned organization. In May 2017 Shift successfully hosted the inaugural Africa Shared Value Summit at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg to further raise awareness of this all-important business concept. Shift is a for profit, majority black female owned business, operating with creating shared value as its core focus.
